Military Standards for Small Arms Packaging

Arms Preservation Inc. (API) VCI Firearm Storage Bags are designed to meet or exceed many of the key U.S. military standards for small arms packaging and corrosion prevention. Here's how they align with the specific requirements:

1. MIL-STD-2073-1 – Military Packaging Methods

API bags support Method 30 and Method 40:

  • Method 30: Weapons can be cleaned, dried, and preserved using a light oil (e.g., MIL-PRF-32033) before being placed in the bag.

  • Method 40: API bags include a moisture- and vapor-barrier layer plus integrated VCI protection, which fulfills the requirement for a waterproof/greaseproof barrier.

2. MIL-PRF-3420 – VCI Paper

  • API uses VCI technology embedded into the film, eliminating the need for separate treated paper.

  • VCIs volatilize and bond to metal surfaces, forming an invisible barrier against oxygen, moisture, and chlorides.

3. MIL-PRF-131 – Water-Vaporproof, Greaseproof Barriers

  • API bags are constructed with a multi-layer film, often including a foil or polyethylene barrier that mimics or exceeds Class 1 MIL-PRF-131 performance for water vapor transmission.

  • Provides a sealed environment with excellent resistance to moisture and oxygen ingress.

4. MIL-DTL-117 – Heat-Sealable Bags

  • Although API bags use Velcro closures for reusability, they can be optionally heat-sealed (depending on application).

  • The closure, combined with durable barrier film, maintains a sealed environment, suitable for repeated use without compromising protection.

5. MIL-PRF-81705 – ESD/Barrier Material

  • API offers specialty bags that combine VCI protection with an ESD outer barrier, conforming to MIL-PRF-81705 Type I, Class 1.

  • These bags are suitable for electro-sensitive firearms and accessories and meet the Air Force's TO 11A-13-10-7packaging guidelines.

6. TO 11A-1-10 & TO 11A-13-10-7 – Preservation of Arms

API bags align with these tech orders by enabling:

  • Proper cleaning, lubrication, and packaging of firearms.

  • Use with preservative oils (like MIL-PRF-32033).

  • Easy insertion of desiccants for long-term climate control.

  • Sealable containment with corrosion-inhibiting environment.

7. MIL-PRF-32033 – Preservative Oil Compatibility

  • API bags are chemically compatible with common military-approved light preservative lubricants, allowing for preservation without degradation of the bag material.
