Industrial VCI Bags for Manufacturing and Metal Storage

Multi-layer VCI barrier packaging for industrial corrosion protection

Arms Preservation Inc. industrial VCI storage bags
protect valuable metal assets during storage, production, maintenance, and shipment.

API combines Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor chemistry with a dedicated moisture barrier. This creates a controlled package that helps protect both ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces.

Applications include precision tools, machined parts, rare earth materials, raw metal stock, service parts, sensors, electronics, and other corrosion-sensitive components.

Why Use Industrial VCI Storage Bags?

Every API industrial bag uses two 4 mil layers for an 8 mil total wall.

The inner layer uses Cortec VpCI-126 MIL multi-metal film. It releases corrosion-inhibiting molecules throughout the enclosed air space.

The outer layer is a 4 mil barrier laminate that blocks water vapor and oxygen. It also stops inhibitor vapor from escaping, so the chemistry stays concentrated around the part.

The laminate also carries the mechanical load. It is puncture-tested to MIL-STD-3010 and posts tensile strength above 4,000 psi per ASTM D882.

API barriers were tested at 90% RH and a hot 104°F. The single-layer baseline was tested at a milder 73°F. At matched temperatures, the performance gap would be even wider.

This two-layer design separates corrosion protection from barrier performance. Each layer performs a specific job instead of asking one polyethylene layer to perform every function.

  • Protects ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces.
  • Helps protect recessed, threaded, internal, and hard-to-reach surfaces.
  • Requires no heavy oil, grease, or cosmoline coating for normal storage.
  • Leaves no thick protective residue to remove before use.
  • Supports short-term storage, long-term preservation, WIP, and shipping.
  • Offers reusable closure and heat-sealable configurations.

Industrial Uses for VCI Storage Bags

The bag does not care what is inside it. Wherever clean metal must sit still without corroding, industrial VCI bags fit the job. These are the most common manufacturing applications.

Valuable Tools and Precision Instruments

Cutting tools, carbide inserts, taps, reamers, and end mills lose value fast when edges rust. Gauge blocks, micrometers, and calibration standards can lose accuracy from light surface corrosion. Dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures often sit for months between production runs.

A VCI bag keeps these tools ready without an oil film to clean off. The reusable Velcro® closure lets a tool crib pull a tool and reseal the bag in seconds.

Rare Earth Metals and Magnets

Rare earth elements such as neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and samarium power EV motors, wind turbines, defense systems, and electronics. These materials are costly and supply-constrained. Many of them also oxidize quickly in humid air.

Sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets are especially vulnerable. Moisture attacks their neodymium-rich grain boundaries first, which can cause surface flaking and lost magnetic strength. Uncoated magnet blanks and magnets with chipped coatings carry the highest risk.

For rare earth alloys, magnet blanks, and rotor assemblies, specify the foil MIL-PRF-81705E Type 1 barrier. Its MVTR of 0.0005 is about 20× lower than the transparent barrier. Heat-seal the bag for long-term holds and store it in a stable location.

Some pure rare earth metals are highly reactive and are often kept under inert gas or oil. For those materials, test a sample lot first. We can help you pair a heat-sealed foil bag with your existing handling protocol.

Raw Materials and Bar Stock

Steel bar, rod, tube, sheet, and plate can flash rust as soon as humidity rises. Copper busbar and brass stock tarnish, and aluminum can form white oxide deposits. Corroded raw material often needs cleaning, re-machining, or scrapping before use.

Long-format bags hold shafts, linear rails, rod stock, and extrusions up to 66" long. Multi-metal chemistry protects mixed inventory inside a single bag.

Sensitive Electronic Components

PCBs, connectors, sensors, relays, and control assemblies fail when contacts corrode or tarnish. Many of these parts are also sensitive to electrostatic discharge. The foil MIL-PRF-81705E Type 1 construction delivers ESD and EMI shielding plus corrosion protection in one package.

The VCI film is also compatible with plastics, elastomers, painted and anodized finishes, and optics. That makes it a fit for encoders, instruments, and optical assemblies.

Bearings, Gears, and Machined Parts

Precision bearings, gears, splines, and finished machined surfaces cannot tolerate pitting. A single rust spot can scrap a part that carries hours of machine time. VCI vapor reaches raceways, gear teeth, and mating surfaces that a wipe-on coating can miss.

Spare Parts and MRO Inventory

Maintenance teams stock critical spares that may sit for years before they are needed. Hydraulic and pneumatic valves, pump parts, seals, fittings, and motor components all fall into this group. A sealed VCI bag keeps each kit clean and ready to install.

The transparent barrier lets staff identify and count parts without breaking the seal. That saves time during cycle counts, audits, and receiving inspection.

Work in Process Between Operations

Parts often wait between machining, heat treating, plating, and assembly. Freshly machined steel can flash rust within hours in a humid shop. Bagging WIP between operations protects the value already added to each part.

Export Shipping and Long-Term Storage

Ocean containers, tropical ports, and unheated warehouses cycle through wide swings in heat and humidity. Each cycle drives moisture toward the coldest surface in a package, which is usually the metal. The foil barrier is the right choice for these conditions.

Mothballed equipment, strategic reserve stock, and contingency spares also fit this profile. Choose foil for any protection window longer than five years.

Defense, Aerospace, and Government Contracts

API bag designs came from a U.S. Marine Corps requirement for long-term M16 rifle storage. Today the same construction serves defense contractors, depots, and aerospace suppliers. Explore our MIL-SPEC packaging options for MIL-DTL-117 and MIL-DTL-22020 bags.

Choose the Right Barrier Grade

Start with the storage environment, not the part. Both grades use the same inner VCI film and the same 8 mil wall. The outer barrier sets the moisture performance ceiling.

Transparent Barrier: MIL-PRF-22191F Type 1

The transparent barrier has an MVTR of 0.010 and 21 lbs of puncture resistance per MIL-STD-3010. Contents stay visible, so parts can be identified without opening the bag. Specify it for indoor warehouses, bin stock, tool cribs, in-plant WIP, and domestic transit.

Foil Shielding Barrier: MIL-PRF-81705E Type 1

The foil barrier has an MVTR of 0.0005 and 19 lbs of puncture resistance per MIL-STD-3010. This metalized PET, polyethylene, and foil laminate also provides ESD and EMI shielding. Specify it for ocean freight, coastal sites, unheated storage, rare earth materials, and static-sensitive electronics.

Industrial VCI Bag Sizes and Closures

API industrial VCI bags come in sizes ranging from 2" × 3" to 16" × 66". Small bags fit fasteners, inserts, sensors, and magnets. Long bags fit shafts, rails, bar stock, and tubing.

Two Barrier Options for Different Industrial Environments

Transparent MIL-PRF-22191F Type 1 Barrier

The transparent barrier is designed for applications where part visibility matters.

It allows staff to identify, count, inspect, and audit packaged items without opening the bag.

Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate, or MVTR, measures how much water vapor passes through packaging film.

API lists an MVTR of 0.010 grams per 100 square inches per day for this barrier material under the published test conditions.

This option fits indoor warehousing, semi-conditioned storage, WIP, tool cribs, domestic transit, bin stock, and general industrial inventory.

Foil MIL-PRF-81705E Type 1 Shielding Barrier

The foil barrier is API's highest-barrier option for demanding storage conditions.

API lists an MVTR of 0.0005 grams per 100 square inches per day for this barrier material under the published test conditions.

It also provides ESD and EMI shielding for static-sensitive contents.

This option fits ocean freight, long-haul shipping, coastal environments, tropical locations, unheated storage, extended preservation, electronics, sensors, and optics.

API's published industrial comparison shows up to 120 times lower MVTR than the cited single-layer VCI poly baseline. The published test temperatures differ between the materials.

Industrial VCI Bag Sizes from 2 x 3 Inches to 16 x 66 Inches

API industrial VCI storage bags can be supplied in sizes ranging from 2 x 3 inches through 16 x 66 inches.

Available dimensions depend on the selected barrier material, closure style, order quantity, and manufacturing requirements.

Small bags work well for fasteners, inserts, sensors, bearings, and precision components.

Longer formats can protect shafts, rails, tooling, tube, rod, bar stock, and extended assemblies.

Closure Options

Bags can be supplied with a pre-installed heavy-duty Velcro® hook-and-loop closure for reusable storage.

Open-mouth bags are also available for operations that heat seal, fold and band, or place the bag inside a rigid container.

Heat-sealable configurations can support preservation programs that require a permanent seal.

Why Moisture Barrier Performance Matters

VCI chemistry works best when the package retains its protective atmosphere and limits outside moisture.

Single-layer polyethylene is permeable to water vapor and VCI vapor. API uses a separate outer barrier to reduce both moisture ingress and outward inhibitor loss.

The result is a more stable micro-environment around the stored metal.

API's industrial packaging sheet lists service life of 5 to 10 years when bags are sealed and stored correctly.

Actual performance depends on cleanliness, storage conditions, seal integrity, handling, and how often the package is opened.
